SONGWRITER, PERFORMER, STORYTELLER

KEN NEWMAN
Ken Newman is a songwriter, performer, and creative director whose work lives at the intersection of poetry, politics, and human vulnerability. Drawing inspiration from artists like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and David Bowie, Newman writes songs that ask difficult questions without pretending to offer easy answers. His latest single, “Who Are the Bad Guys,” explores power, inequality, propaganda, and complicity through sharp imagery and emotionally charged storytelling, turning the lens as much toward ourselves as the systems around us. Rather than preaching, Newman’s writing leans into ambiguity, tension, and empathy, allowing listeners to arrive at their own conclusions.

Originally from San Francisco and now based much of the year in Zihuatanejo, Newman brings decades of experience as both a musician and storyteller to his work. His songs move fluidly between intimate personal reflection and broader social commentary, often blending intimate acoustic textures with cinematic emotional weight. Whether performing solo with a single guitar or building layered studio arrangements, Newman’s focus remains the same: songs that feel lived in, emotionally honest, and unafraid to confront uncomfortable truths.
THE ARTIST STORY
Whether I’m playing solo, with percussion, or with a full band, I want audiences to feel like they’re part concertgoers and part participants in a conversation. Some songs are funny, some are political, some are deeply personal. My goal is to make people laugh, think, sing along, and maybe leave with one idea they hadn’t considered before.

SAN FRANCISCO TO ZIHUATANEJO
THE ARTIST STORY
I love San Francisco. It really is one of my favorite cities in the U.S., if not the world. It afforded me countless opportunities to perform, study, and be inspired by a wide range of musicians, songwriters, and other creative artists.
ZIHUATANEJO
The surprise is how much of an effect it HAS had. In many ways, it’s had a greater impact on me as a guitarist and songwriter than anything else I’ve ever done.

MUSICAL JOURNEY
MUSICAL INFLUENCES & EVOLUTION
I would say that Springsteen and Dylan were big early influences. Lately there’s much more in the mix; Leonard Cohen, early Tom Waits, David Bowie, Radiohead and others. And as I mentioned, the musical structure and chord voicings of Flamenco have very much influenced the melodies I’m now working with.
Having these new tools, combined with countless opportunities to perform live, accelerated my growth far more than practicing alone in a bedroom ever could.

GIVING BACK
At this stage of my life, success looks different than it once did. I get to write songs I care about, perform them in a place I love, and use whatever proceeds they generate to support organizations helping local children and families. I’m living in paradise, doing work that matters to me, and still finding new things to learn. That’s a pretty good definition of the dream.
